The Harmonic Church of the Diminished Fifth used LSD as their holy sacrament. Even though a chemist will tell you that the chemical composition of LSD-25 cannot change, church leader Hi Rev Sonic Iconic claimed that the tabs used in church ritual had a special ability to create musical hallucinations. Despite the scientific absurdity over such a claim,  people who are under the influence of LSD are certainly very suggestible, and people who use LSD on a regular basis prefer certain brands or blotter designs over others because they feel that they have certain qualities that they enjoy.

In that context there is no denying that the ritualised ingestion of the drug in a religious setting, and the positive reinforcement that surrounded the claims that were made, would have put participants in a highly suggestible state. Borrowing from the Christian religion, where members accepted the “body of Christ” when they were given a wafer of special bread, Hi Rev Sonic Iconic challenged members of his church to accept him and his beliefs into their lives in a very concrete way: every tab of LSD that was used ritually within the church carried his face and and the W sign, which the Church had adopted from anti-prohibition activists. Singing of course featured strongly in these rituals so it is no surprise if instructions to listen carefully for the music of the spheres began to give rise to real aural hallucinations, which then became self-perpetuating within the congregation.

The Church claimed that LSD was also used in rituals to help break the feeling of separation that they saw as the result of societal conditioning.

We are born in a state of mystical awareness but society robs us at an early age. We become imprinted with a perverted view of our place in the Magnum Opus. We feel disconnected, strangers in a strange land. We feel out of tune, trying to fit in with the rest of the band. LSD and conscious awareness of music helps us realise the true nature of consciousness. Yes, we are players in the orchestra, but we are also the entire orchestra, conductor and all, we are the instruments, we are the audience, and not only that: we are the music itself.

– Especially high doses are given as part of special ceremonies when members reach the age of 16, 33, 45 and 72. These are known as “bridge years” that separate the five movements of a lifetime.
